Find a Friend; Make it a Game

Written by Paul on March 11, 2008.

I have had countless people tell me that they just don’t care enough to take the time to get a good price on something. I can actually understand this mentality. Although finding a good deal has always given me something of a high the want to hunt for a better price is not always there. This is one of the reasons I write this blog. It keeps me motivated. But, before I started writing about being frugal my main motivation for continuing to save money was being able to say I saved more than someone I know (like my sister who is tough to beat). Saving became a game. Although the winner saves a little more than the loser both people end up better off by saving money they would have otherwise spent on higher prices. Accountability is a powerful motivator whether it be exercising, studying, or saving money. So find a friend and challenge them to a grocery shopping contest. See who can save the most on groceries for the next month. It will do your pocket book and friendship a load of good.

My sister-in-law (who lives 5-blocks down my street) and I compete every month, on who can have the lowest utility bill. It’s kind of fun! Your right… a little friendly competition is a terrific motivator!
