Get Off the List

Written by Paul on March 27, 2008.

One of the principles I learned in getting my degree in marketing was that you have to have lists.  By having large lists with as much data as possible you can market the right product to the right person at the right time.  If you use your list effectively people will read or listen to your advertising and respond the way you want them to.  The problem arises when marketers just blanket advertise instead of doing targeted advertising.  This results in tons of junk mail, e-mail, and phone calls.  To sum it up there are a lot of people in marketing that just should not be there.  They have no clue how to appeal to different demographics and so they just throw stuff at a wall and until something sticks and we are left with all the trash advertising that we do not want.

This is where the Direct Marketing Association website comes in.   This page is completely devoted to the consumer.  It can teach you how to remove your name from mailing lists, telemarketing lists, e-mail lists, and much more. If you are a person that is bothered by all the marketing you can get the majority of it to stop by using this information.  The site also gives some great information on how to help the elderly with these problems.

Personally I think marketing is a noble profession tainted by people who either do not know what to do or are lacking in ethical fortitude.  Kind of like politics.  In our great capitalist society we need marketers we just don’t need crappy marketers.
