I used to carry a thumb drive with me everywhere. It was convenient and could store a ton of files that I used regularly. Then, of course, the inevitable happened and I lost my thumb drive. My wife has lost hers a couple of times and as I asked around this seems to be a phenomenon that happens to almost everyone who uses a thumb drive regularly.
With the increase in wireless hotspots the thumb drive is now becoming obsolete. Instead of carrying something around a device that can be lost I have switched to online storage. It's fast, it's easy and of course its FREE (my favorite word). I am now using SkyDrive from Microsoft. It gives you a free 25 GB of storage that you can access wherever you have internet access. You can also access it from any computer. This makes it easy to share files and to access needed files when I am working.
Now I only used this tool sparingly at first because it was too hard to access (who wants to log in every time). I then found SDExplorer. This handy and free little program allows you to see the SkyDrive service as just another drive on your computer. So instead of uploading files from a web page you can now just drag and drop like we are used to for our thumb drive. This makes the SkyDrive storage so user friendly that I use it all the time now.
To get started you have to have a Windows Live or Hotmail account, sign up for the SkyDrive service, and then download and install SDExplorer. I hope this helps you as much as it is helping me.
