Getting Discounts on Your Auto Insurance

Getting new insurance quotes every year to two years is by far the best way to keep your insurance costs low.  If you have not gotten new quotes in the last year I recommend Netquote to get a bunch of insurance quotes from reputable companies by filling out only one form (I got 8 quotes in 15 minutes).

Once you have a new quote or policy, you need to make sure you are getting all the discounts that are available through many insurance companies.

Students - If you are a full time student at any level you can get discounts for maintaining at least a B average.  This is the only benefit parents of teenagers get when adding them too their insurance so one way to get your kids to keep their grades up is telling them they will have to get a job and pay the difference.

Employer and Organizations - Many time insurance companies give discounts to federal and state employees, teachers, and military personel.  There  are also some discounts for organizations like AAA.

Multi-Policy - Having both auto and home owners on the same policy will almost always generate a multi-policy discount.

Usage - If you do not drive as much you will not get charged as much for your policy.  The key is to stay under 6,000 miles for the year.  This is a great reason to carpool or, if you have two cars, to concentrate on using one vehicle for all family trips so the other one gets this discount.

Equipment - Airbags, automatic seat belts, and other built in safety equipment can get you an automatic discount on your policy.

Paying Lump Sum - If you pay your premiums in one year or six month lump sums the companies will many times take a whole month or two months worth of premiums off the top.  Once you get the discomfort of the first payment out of the way just save a months worth of premiums out of each of your monthly budgets and you have just given yourself a big discount and made it easy to pay.
