Sales Tax Holidays Roundup

Many states have been running tax free weekends to help their populations deal with the costs of school supplies and the normal costs that come with the end of summer.  I have never found the weekends to be great deals, but if there is something you have been needing, and no one seems to ever run a sale on it, a tax free weekend would be a good chance to save a few dollars on that item. Sadly, a few states that are strapped for cash have canceled their tax free weekends.  There are, however, 16 states still participating in this great custom.  Here are the details for all of those states:

School Supplies, Clothing, and/or Computers
Computers and related items are in bold because of the larger potential savings

  • Alabama: August 7-9, applies to certain school supplies, computers, and clothing. See a list of participating counties here.
  • Georgia: July 30 - August 2, applies to clothing and footwear under $100 per item, computers and accessories of $1,500 or less, and general school supplies of $20 or less per item.
  • Louisiana: August 7-8, applies to "all consumer purchases of tangible personal property for non-business use."
  • Missouri: August 7-9, applies to clothing of $100 or less, school supplies under $50 per purchase, computer software of $350 or less, computers under $3,500, computer peripherals under $3,500.
  • New Mexico: August 7-9, applies to clothing and footwear under $100, computersof $1,000 or less, computer peripherals of $500 or less, and school supplies. (.pdf link)
  • North Carolina: August 7-9, applies to clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item, school instructional materials of $300 or less per item, sports and recreational equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item, and computer supplies of $250 or less per item.
  • South Carolina: August 7-9, applies to clothing, footwear, school supplies, computers, computer software, comforter sets, bed spreads, bed linens, and more.
  • Tennessee: August 7-10, applies to clothing and footwear of $100 or less, school supplies of $100 or less, and computers of $1,500 or less.
  • Texas: August 21-23, applies to clothing and footwear under $100 per item, backpacks under $100 per item, and select school supplies priced at less than $100 per item.
  • Vermont: August 22, applies to "sale of items of tangible personal propertycosting $2,000 or less." (.pdf link)

Clothing Only

  • Connecticut: August 16-22, applies to clothing and footwear under $200 per item.
  • Iowa: August 7-8, applies to clothing and footwear under $100 per item.
  • Mississippi: July 31 - August 1, applies to clothing and footwear under $100. (.pdf link)

Energy Star Appliances

  • Georgia: October 1-4, applies to energy- and water-efficient products.
  • West Virginia: September 1 - November 20, applies to select Energy Star-compliant products only.
