All three credit bureaus have now or are going to make it possible to freeze your credit report. A credit freeze will have to be filed with each bureau and will cost $10 with Experian and TransUnion. Equifax is doing the honorable thing and offering theirs for free. When you freeze your credit it makes it impossible for new accounts to be opened on your credit report without you personally “thawing” your credit. This means that if you do not need access to your credit, or if you need to keep yourself away from your credit, you can can protect your report from unwanted predators. Equifax and TransUnion will allow credit freezes to be processed as of October 15 and Experian will start its process on November 1. This is a great move for the consumer and is well over due.
