TIWIK — Things I Wish I had Known

There are many experiences you have to go through in order to learn a lesson.  There are many others that can be taught at an early age.  Many times we just do not get the memo either because those who mentor us do not know the information themselves or because they did not think that the information was relevant to our lives.  This usually comes up when talking about finances.  People just do not pass information to their children properly or they do not have the information themselves.  For this reason I am going to start the TIWIK (Things I Wish I had Known) series of posts.  My hope is that we all take note of what we are teaching our children and at what ages we can really start to mold them into great money managers.

Though my wife and I do not have children, yet (do not read into this statement), we have been discussing how we are going to raise the little pagans once one comes on the scene.  My goal is to use the TIWIK posts to sort out a map for how I want my children to learn and grow as money managers.  By doing this I may be able to benefit my family tree as well as that of others.  This will be an ongoing series of posts not a series where I post each day on the same subject for a week.  I also see it as a means to get others to do some guest posts on this blog and get some different points of view.  My first of these, since this is really just an intro, will be on Thursday.  I think it will be a lot of fun and hope you enjoy the TIWIK series.

  • This is a great idea. My parents filed bankruptcy twice while I was growing up so subsequently...I didn't learn a whole lot about fiscal responsibility from them. My mom continues to handle finances badly even though of course she knows better. I had to learn for myself with lots and lots of mistakes. But I know many people whose parents were good with money but never actually taught their children so they end up making mistakes the same mistakes I did. Sometimes you have to have dug yourself a huge hole before you start thinking about change. Great subject and I look forward to the posts!

  • I think these posts sound like a great idea!

  • This will really be interesting to see what you put in this TIWIK. We tried from a very young age to teach our children thru the jar system how to save, spend and tithe. We also would like to think we were a good example by the way we lived.
