Americans paid over four billion dollars in ATM fees last year. And we wonder why the banks are showing such amazing profit margins. The truth is you can avoid these fees by just being careful. Check your bank to see if they have machines where you are going to be traveling, know where the machines are in your area, and if you do not have easy access to cash try using your debit card instead.
Another great resource are smaller banks and credit unions. Even though they do not have the large network like the mega banks they usually belong to a coop or organization that allows you to use the ATMs of similar size financial institutions. Credit unions are great for this. You can check to see if there is a credit union in your area at CUNA.org. You can also find out where member credit unions are located so you have free access to an ATM when traveling.
Lets cut out these unnecessary fees and keep a little more money in our accounts.
