2015 was a rough year financially in my family. With our kitchen having to be completely torn out and remodeled, and four different major appliances breaking it was not the most fun year ever. The good news is we made it through and didn’t acquire any debt in the process.
So I am really looking forward to making 2016 a great year, both personally and on SavingFreak.com
What to Expect from SavingFreak.com in 2016
I have spent my break over Christmas and New Years deciding the direction and tempo I want to take with this blog. With three kids and the most amazing wife ever, life is crazy so I feel like two to three posts per week is the right pace for my current situation.
One post of the group will be about saving money. This could be how to save money on a specific item or category, or it could be how to save money at a specific store. Either way each post is going to be detailed and give you all the information I have on saving money.
The other posts each week will be broader in the topic of personal finance. They could be on budgeting, investing, or anything personal finance related.
I have blogger friends that post every day or multiple times a day and that used to work for me, but I really want to move this blog into helping people not just providing you small bits of information. So expect these posts to be a minimum of 1500 words and probably more in the 2000 word range. They will be full of information from my brain and the research I do trying to make life better for all of us. I am really excited about where I am taking the blog this next year and look forward to connecting with you more through the comments and social media. If you have never connected with me before feel free to drop me a line on Twitter or Facebook.
Steps We All Need to Take to Have a Great 2016
I like the month of January because it is a great time to re-evaluate what we are doing in our day to day lives. Here are the questions I am answering for me and with my wife this month.
What are Our Financial Goals for This Year?
Since you are reading a personal finance blog you had to expect it to be at the top. This is a tough one for many people, but if we do not look at our current financial situation and decide to make it better, there is a good chance it will never get better.
What Are My Personal Goals for This Year?
Whether it is losing weight, getting a bad habit out of the way, or just taking a little better care of ourselves we need to make these kind of goals to push ourselves forward. I have another 20 lbs to drop off. I am 30 lbs lighter than I used to be but still not as slim as I would like, so 20 more lbs in 2016 seems like the right number for me.
I am also working on how to be a better dad to each of my kids. As they get older and their personal needs change I want to make sure I am parenting them as each of the three needs most.
What Are Our Family Goals This Year?
With three kids I always want to be improving as a father and as a family. Amy and I haven’t hammered this one out yet but we will by the end of January. We make priorities like reading to our kids and spending family time, but we could be a bit more deliberate in these areas. My son is now old enough to enjoy books that have chapters so we have started the Harry Potter books. I know one of our goals is to finish them all by the end of 2016.
The question I am asking myself at the beginning of this year is, “At the end of 2016 what do I want life to look like?” In the past when I have not done this my year usually does alright but I do not maximize my efforts by having a clear goal. What are your goals for this year? If you feel like sharing leave them in the comments or hit me up on Twitter.
