- UPP Allows For More Price Fixing April 18, 2012
After we just talked about Apple price fixing ebooks I just ran across an article talking about UPP and what it means for consumers. In case you aren't watching the electronics industry like I am UPP stands for Unilateral Pricing Program. In this program a manufacturer recommends what the price of each of their items should cost. A manufacturer suggesting the price of an item is nothing new, but the big twist with UPP is that if a retailer does not stick to the pricing of any of their items the manufacturer will not allow the retailer to sell ANY of their products. That's right sell it my way or don't sell anything I have. So far four manufacturers (Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and LG) have adopted this policy. This means higher prices for you on all of these products. For me, I think I will be watching for lower prices from other manufacturers to see if we can break these companies from their decision to not compete for my business.
